UTF-8 Dirify bug and patch
Today we are releasing a patch to fix an issue for customers running Movable Type versions 3.16 or 3.17 and using UTF-8 character encoding on their weblogs. Specifically, a bug introduced in Movable Type 3.16 causes the dirify routine to preserve dashes in transformed text where, historically, it has suppressed them. This could be problematic because the dirify routine is used to create all URLs in Movable Type.
While default Movable Type installations are not adversely affected by this bug, there are certain common or legacy customizations (which will be detailed below) that could cause problems. For that reason,...

I would categorize a BLOG content into mainly two groups. One for Broadcasting my opinion, which can be one about a social, political, technical, or entertainmental stuffs, to the world. I want as many people as possible to listen my voice. And the other is wholly for LOGging my personal affairs. I don't care who would see it or not.
Then, what means do I have in order to broadcate my post? How can I provide more opportunity for the world to take something from my posts? It can be possible by using meta blog sites, various syndication feeds, trackback pings or so. Are you satisfied?

With all the new features in Movable Type 3.2, the question on the minds of a lot of our current users is, "Yeah, this looks good, but how easy will it be to upgrade?"
We think the new version's not just the easiest version of Movable Type by far to upgrade, but it's the easiest of almost any web application we've seen. It'd be easy to tell you all about it, but it's even better to show you. So we've created a brief (one minute) Flash video to show you just how simple it is.
You can click on the thumbnail to start the 818KB movie.

Movable Type's often been praised for both the elegance of its user interface and the way the system's published pages look. But the current generation of default designs have gotten a little long in the tooth, and we wanted to make sure that designers who take the time to make templates and styles get the most value out of their effort. So, we've made some significant improvements to Movable Type 3.2's templates. Here's some highlights: • An attractive new default stylesheet that works easily with 1, 2, and 3-column layouts • Dozens of great new themes available for download for your blog, and the ability to customize these or create your own using professional tools like Adobe GoLive...

With Movable Type 3.2's focus on enabling community, we wanted to make sure that a blog administrator can recognize the people who build the community around a weblog. And if you're keeping a personal blog, you want to make sure your friends feel welcome when they visit your site.
TypeKey Authentication
Last year, we released the TypeKey authentication service to allow commenters to identify themselves in a consistent manner. This lets site owners assign persistent rules to an individual that act every time that person visits a blog. Since then, over a million people have signed in with the service, and a thriving community has sprung up around the TypeKey service and protocol.
The TypeKey authentication...

Question
When trying to view my Activity Log, I get a 500 Internal Server Error.
Answer
Note: This information refers only to Movable Type versions below 3.2. In 3.2, the Activity Log display is now paginated.
If you've not reset your Activity Log in a while, it's possible it has grown so large that any request to view it will time out on your server, resulting in an error.
In pre-3.16 versions of Movable Type, you can use the following URL to reset your Activity Log without having to view it first: http://www.example.com/mt/mt.cgi?__mode=reset...

Even though our ProNet weblog has already linked to Photo Gallery Templates, Doug Bowman's amazingly elegant and massively thorough set of Movable Type templates used to create gorgeous photo presentations, I would be remiss if I failed to give a shout out to the work he's done.
And if you thought the templates themselves were beautiful, wait until you see the documentation! Doug writes about Photo Gallery Templates over on his weblog.
Like Anil says over on Pronet: "if you're interested in doing justice to your photos using the full power of Movable Type, or just want to marvel at some really creative work, give Doug's writeup a look."
And with the new version of Movable Type (3.2)...

New in Movable Type 3.2: A home for administrators
One of Movable Type's biggest strengths is the platform's support for an unlimited number of weblogs. Once you've got a thriving community of bloggers creating entries and publishing their thoughts, though, it quickly becomes necessary to manage the weblogs on your system.
To meet this need, we've introduced an entire new area of functionality in Movable Type 3.2: The System Overview. We've chosen the System Overview as the first feature to highlight in this new release because it represents a single home for administrators. It's one place to go to oversee everything that's happening across your...

Question
I've logged in to Movable Type, but everything I click takes me back to the Login page again.
Answer
This is related to the cookie Movable Type must set to keep you logged in during your session.
Note: There is a Known Issue in version 3.16 which prevents the login cookie from being set correctly when Movable Type is installed in the root folder of a domain. This issue was resolved in version 3.17 (released on June 2, 2005), so you should upgrade in order to correct this particular type of login problem.
If the Known Issue above does not...

A few new guides that might be of interest to bloggers have just been released by Yahoo. The first is the Publisher's Guide to RSS, which explains the ways that various Yahoo services can take advantage of XML feeds. The practices listed here can all be used to good effect on almost any blog, in addition to meeting Yahoo's needs.
From a slightly different perspective, Yahoo's also published their Employee Blog Guidelines, which are available as a three-page PDF file. Though some of the language and guidelines are specific to Yahoo, almost all of the points would be helpful in drafting a custom set of guidelines for your own organization.

Using includes is a wonderful way to reuse code through modularity on your site. Elise over Learning MovableType has a great tutorial on using includes, and I suggest you read it if you haven't already since this article will take off where hers leaves off and discusses a problem that dynamic site owners encounter when trying to use includes.
In a dynamic environment most people feel that PHP includes is the way to go and generally they are right. When they try to include MovableType tags in a PHP include, however, a problem raises its ugly head. This article will explain why this happens, and how to fix it. NOTE: This article only applies to dynamically generated pages.
I won't go into how great PHP...

Today I was working with someone and having a bear of a time getting their 3.17 install working on their GoDaddy hosting account. It turns out that the way the script name was accessed had changed - and since GoDaddy runs under sbox, it was returning sbox as the name when it redirected you back to the page! So with a few small edits to App.pm, I got around this issue and made things work.
I'm still having problems with getting dynamic publishing to work on GoDaddy, but at least we're making progress. If you are installing Movable Type on your GoDaddy host, and running into problems, take a look at our Movable Type Consulting Services to see how we can help.
Update: I think I have...
