21. Movable Type 3.2 under LighTPD and FastCGI

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 193 words

As we were proud to announce yesterday, Movable Type 3.2 has been released. We'll be providing a lot more details and documentation in the days and weeks to come, but Brad Choate's started the parade of cool new tips and tracks with his description of LightTPD and FastCGI support in version 3.2.

We're always excited to expand Movable Type's platform support, especially to environments that can improve responsiveness and performance. If you're familiar with the power of LightTPD and FastCGI, you'll want to try out your new Movable Type 3.2 install using Brad's directions.

22. Praise for Movable Type 3.2

Six Apart Mena's Corner, News, 12 KB, 435 words

It's been a week since we released Movable Type 3.2 and if you haven't yet checked out the new version, you should do so now. For those of you who may still be on a 2.x version and were reluctant to upgrade because of the past weblog limitations, remember that all versions (including free) now have unlimited weblogs.

I'm obviously biased, but like I said in an earlier post, it's really an awesome release. It's hard to articulate the feeling I have about it. Ben and I are obviously MT's parents but it's like we sent our baby to school and trusted a group of people (teachers, peers and friends) to bring her to the next level in life. I know it's just software, but Movable Type is so...

23. Calendars with Movable Type 3.2

Movalog, Tutorials, 26 KB, 529 words

With v3.2 of Movable Type, Six Apart removed the calendar from the sidebar of the default templates citing rebuild times as the reason. They did post the code that was used in previous versions. However, many users found that simply pasting the code in didn't yield a properly formatted calendar. So after a little digging around, I've come up with the following code which will create a calendar that will be correctly formatted and fit in with your stylesheet. Simply copy the code and put it in your sidebar - a good location would be just above <div class="module-search module">

<div class="module-calendar module"> <h2 class="module-header"><$MTDate format="%B %Y"$><...

24. 3.2 (2005.08.25)

Six Apart User Manual, Manuals, 45 KB, 3336 words

3.2 (2005.08.25)

Major Features

• New dead-simple AJAX-powered installation/upgrade process (see screencast demo) which replaces mt-load.cgi and all mt-upgrade* scripts. Also eliminated the upgrade distribution since only the config file would be different. • Combined mt.cfg and mt-db-pass.cgi into mt-config.cgi. Shipping as mt-config.cgi-original so as to prevent overwriting when upgrading. • Introduced the new System Overview section which allows administrators to configure and manage aspects of the system across all weblogs • Introduced a plugin-based feedback rating framework which scores comments and TrackBacks upon submission on a scale from -10 (least desirable) to 10 (most desirable)...

25. Commenter Management in Movable Type 3.2

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 17 KB, 464 words

One of the primary concerns for this new release of Movable Type was to really enable the creation and management of a community around your blogs. But you can't build your community unless you know who's participating in it, so we've made individual profile pages for each commenter who provides feedback on your blog, along with powerful new listings pages for managing the members of your community.

What's New Since The Last Version?

In Movable Type 3.0x and 3.1x, the platform offered a simple listing of commenters with the commenter's status (whether they were banned or approved), their name, a link to their TypeKey profile, and some simple tools to approve or ban the commenter.

With the new version, we've...

26. alogblog MT Interface for ver. 3.2

alogblog, Plugins, 17 KB, 781 words

This plugin changes the original MT interface to new one. I named it as alogblog MT interface. It's for anyone fully accustomed to MT 3.2's menu system, because it has no visible menu title, just only icons.

Features

• 720px fixed width(essentialy wider than the original) • center located • round cornered box • top located icon menubar • switchable alternate stylesheets • configurable to each blog • disabling plugin restores original MT interface

27. Selecting Categories in Movable Type 3.2

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 217 words

One of our goals for Movable Type 3.2 was to make the system more pleasant to work with every day. And one of the small improvements in this version that we think will help save the time (and sanity!) of all of us who use Movable Type every day is a revamp of the way authors can select multiple categories for an entry.

Movable Type has long supported assigning multiple categories to any entry, and since version 3.1, you've also been able to easily create an infinite number of subcategories as well. But the default drop-down box hadn't evolved to accommodate these powerful new options, and solutions like putting a giant collection of checkboxes next to every entry would add to amount...

Learning Movable Type, News, 14 KB, 180 words

...and it's worth waiting for. See the Six Apart announcement and a description of one of the main new features - System Overview, perfect for those of us who manage multiple blogs on one MT installation. I say it's worth waiting for because there are going to be some major changes to the templates, and if you are doing some rework to your MT-powered site right now, you may want to hold off until 3.2 is released. There will be over a hundred new features. Check in with the ProNet weblog as Anil and Jay post explanations of the new features over the next several weeks. 32. Converting MT 2.x styles to MT 3

Movalog, Tutorials, 27 KB, 672 words

Learning Movable Type has a tutorial on how to apply MT 3 styles to a 2.x blog but what about the other way around ?

I scanned two similar stylesheets to see what changed, basically the only thing you need to change is the definitions names mostly, the actually style definitions can stay the same. I am assuming you are using the default MT 3 templates Here is what has changed with the CSS from MT 2.x to MT 3 styles - it may not be perfect but it'll be darn close. I have listed the MT 2.x definitions and then the MT 3 definition it needs to be changed to: • .description becomes #banner h2 • #content and .blogbody becomes .content • #links becomes #right • .title becomes .content h3 • .date becomes...

33. Simple Example Templates for Movable Type 3.2

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 156 words

Chris Vannoy has posted some simple Movable Type templates based on the new default templates in Movable Type, but with much of the XHTML structure stripped out so they're easier to read. As Chris explains in his following post, they're not designed to be used on an actual site, since the styling would be pretty ugly by default, but they're a useful basis for creating your own completely custom design if you just need a place to get started.

We'll be producing additional documentation about all the new abilities that templates and styles have in Movable Type 3.2, but this is a great place to start if you just want to see the basics of what a template can do.

34. Adding a Calendar to Your MT 3.2 Blog

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 19 KB, 405 words

This tutorial is written by LMT author Arvind Satyanarayan of Movalog. Tutorial cross posted on Movalog and LMT.

With the release of Movable Type version 3.2, Six Apart opted to not include the calendar feature that had been included by default in earlier versions. The reason for this is that calendars, with the days linking to blog archives, are resource intensive; they can significantly lengthen rebuild times. Six Apart has posted the code that was used in previous versions of MT. However, many users have found that simply copying and pasting the code as given doesn't yield a properly formatted calendar.

The following code will create a calendar that will be correctly formatted and...

35. Movable Type 3.2 Beta is Here!

Learning Movable Type, News, 22 KB, 700 words

Six Apart released the public beta of MT version 3.2 today. This new release of MT brings some welcome features - Trackback moderation, global comment and trackback management, administrative control for those with multiple blogs on the same installation, spam protection, and user-interface improvements throughout the application. Here's some more information on the new features including improved documentation. Now that's a long time coming. (But hey, why isn't LMT or Movalog mentioned in the "But I love to read" section? Does one have to be in print to be considered an author of useful MT info? From my server logs I can see that thousands of tutorial pages are printed out from...

38. Creating a 3-Column Layout in MT3.2

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 26 KB, 1249 words

The default Movable Type MT3.2 templates come with one sidebar on the right side of the Main Index page. With a little template manipulation you can have an additional sidebar on the left - a 3-column layout.

The MT3.2 stylesheets and templates are designed to have the columns laid out in order, starting with the column named "alpha". The columns, in order are alpha, beta, gamma (for a 3-column layout), and delta (a hypothetical fourth column that one could create). In the default MT3.2 Main Index template, the sidebar is on the right and is in a column named "beta.

To add a third column, you will make a copy of the default "beta" column code and put it before the "alpha"...

Movable Type 3.2 has only been out a few weeks and we have already seen a number of innovative uses built on the platform. Here’s a look at two of them that launched this past week.

Wal-Mart is a company that elicits strong opinions - exactly the type of company that can greatly benefit from having a voice in the blogosphere. Wal-Mart’s Stories blog focuses on narratives from the frontline of Hurricane Katrina by providing behind the scenes stories of the impact of the hurricane on their business, employees and customers' lives. Many of these stories are quite compelling. and we were gratified to see that Wal-Mart is also reaching out to their readership to collect...

40. MT3.2 - Bare Essentials Templates

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 25 KB, 1434 words

This tutorial is written by LMT guest author Chris Vannoy of Circadian Rhythm.

Movable Type's default templates have always been intimidating things to those new to the system, and with Six Apart's decision to standardize their template structure across all three of their blogging platforms, TypePad and LiveJournal being the other two, they've become a lot more intimidating in version 3.2 of Movable Type.

This standardization is a great idea if you are a web designer already familiar with the intricacies of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The standardization means that, assuming users stick to the default templates, you could design one stylesheet that would work on sites on all three...
