1. Making AJAX work for everyone

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 15 KB, 222 words

With all the growing excitement around AJAX web development and the new toolkits becoming available, it's important to make sure this new breed of web applications is available for everyone who uses the web.

Some useful new references that can help your AJAX projects are AJAX and accessibility and Jeremy Keith's Progressive enhancement with AJAX, which makes an explicit connection between using AJAX technologies to improve a page's function and using progressive enhancement with semantic markup and CSS to improve a page's presentation.

2. Ajax Archive Drop Downs

Movalog, Tutorials, 31 KB, 856 words

In this thread, Gary highlighted how to have drop downs of archives that basically redirected to the appropriate page once an archive was chosen. With this tutorial, I'll take that one step further and use AJAX such that when you select an archive, rather than redirecting to the corresponding archive page, the appropriate posts will just replace those currently shown. You can see a pretty basic example heremp;

First of all, here's the AJAX code that you'll need to put within your <head></head> tags <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var xmlhttp=false; /*@cc_on @*/ /*@if (@_jscript_version >= 5) try { xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); }...

3. An Executive Summary of Ajax

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 18 KB, 327 words

It's been less than a year since Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path coined the term "Ajax" to describe many contemporary web development techniques, but since then the term's become so popular it's inspired its own mini-hype cycle. Fortunately, Adaptive Path is helping to clarify the ideas around Ajax and explain them in simple business terms for the overwhelming majority of companies that just want to know what Ajax can do for them.

With their new free Executive Brief on Ajax, there's a clear explanation of the term that Professional Network members should find invaluable in explaining concepts to your clients, customers, or coworkers. As more and more developers make use of...

4. Rico AJAX library

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 252 words

Sabre's development team has just released Rico, a javascript library for creating rich applications using AJAX technologies. Available under an Apache license, a lot of common visual and data-manipulation functions are bundled into this cross-browser AJAX implementation. The offering comes complete with demos of the most common effects.

The library comes to us via Jeff Veen, who offers some excellent perspective on designing for the subtlety that's possible with these new techniques:

ot all that long ago interaction on the Web was a lot simpler -- you clicked a link, the page you were on disappeared, you waited a bit, a new one appeared. No feedback was really necessary. Clearly,...

5. SAJAX: Simple Ajax Toolkit

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 196 words

Sometimes development trends are worth the hype. If you've been itching to play around with the AJAX approach to web applications, you'll want to grab the SAJAX Toolkit. It's PHP-only for right now, but it gives you a robust set of tools for getting started with much richer web applications. SAJAX is BSD licensed, making it fair game for your apps even if you want to charge for them, and there's a donation link so you can support its further development.

If you do dig into AJAX functionality, be sure to check out these XMLHttpRequest usability guidelines for some best practices on how to make sure your gee-whiz features meet your users' expectations.

6. Introducing Ajax

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 139 words

Adaptive Path's Jesse James Garrett has just published ajax: a new approach to web applications. It's a synthesis of the increasing developer momentum behind Asynchronous Javascript and XML. By pulling examples from around the web, Jesse's outlined a consistent way of looking at one of the most popular platforms for modern web development.

If you're not already familiar with it, you should also be sure to check out Jesse's Elements of User Experience, which provides an indispensable diagram laying out the relationship of each of the many disciplines that contribute to user experience on the web, providing helpful context for web efforts whether they're based on Ajax or not.

7. Using Ajax with TypeKey

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 126 words

Since anything worth doing on the web is worth doing with Ajax, Joe D'Andrea's written up his technique for using Ajax with TypeKey. It's a clean and simple implementation of the authentication service, and it's found a good home on the Everything TypeKey site as well.

8. Ajax-Enabling Movable Type Comments

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 13 KB, 94 words

Being able to update a page inline is one of the benefits of the trend towards AJAX applications, and Bryan Buchs shows this to good effect with his demonstration of Ajax-ified comments. By including some simple template updates for Movable Type, it's possible to streamline the commenting experience on your site, and make your blog a little more gee-whiz while doing it.

9. So you'd like to make an Ajax map

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 189 words

Our own Mark Paschal just visited Linden Lab, the creators of the popular online gaming community Second Life, and he was inspired to create a new app called Landmarker.

From Mark's description:

At Cienna Rand's suggestion, I've been building a site to classify and share Second Life landmarks, Landmarker. On the writing side, you can post landmarks, write a description, add lightweight categories (tags), and link to pictures taken of that place with Snapzilla or Flickr (*cough* TypePad *cough*). For reading, you can browse by author, tag, or in-world geography. You can also add authors and tags to your "inbox" to check more easily.

UPDATE: Donors check your Paypal emails!

I'm incredibly proud to announce CustomFields 1.0. This is a plugin set consisting of two plugins, one for entries and the other for authors, that allow you to (finally) define custom fields in a powerful way rather than resorting to hacks. This plugin consists of: • Author custom fields - this allows you to define custom fields to allow you to rebuild proper author profile/bio pages. • Author Archiving - This author plugin in the set builds on Brad Choate's Authors plugin, which means you have all those tags available. These tags can be used with the powerful author archiving system I've built into this plugin that mimics Movable Type's current...

New in Movable Type 3.2: A home for administrators

One of Movable Type's biggest strengths is the platform's support for an unlimited number of weblogs. Once you've got a thriving community of bloggers creating entries and publishing their thoughts, though, it quickly becomes necessary to manage the weblogs on your system.

To meet this need, we've introduced an entire new area of functionality in Movable Type 3.2: The System Overview. We've chosen the System Overview as the first feature to highlight in this new release because it represents a single home for administrators. It's one place to go to oversee everything that's happening across your...

17. Complex Dynamic Lists: Your Order Please

A List Apart, Tutorials, 14 KB, 1277 words

In our struggle to reduce the number of steps site visitors must take to accomplish their goals, we face a number of challenges. One of them is to provide a good way for users to choose from a list of hierarchical elements. For example, a list that serves as a diner menu, offering a selection of drinks, main dishes, salads, and desserts.

Two techniques might be used to solve this kind of problem: • The straightforward, step-by-step approach with reloads in between each page. This is the safest and most commonly used approach; but it increases server traffic and requires patience on the user's part. • Dynamic select boxes.

The complex solution

Dynamic select boxes, in which choosing an item in the first box changes the content of the second box, saves the user a reload - if she has JavaScript at her disposal. If not, we need to reload the page and populate the second select box on the server. Both options have several problems though:...

18. Ajaxify: EnhancedEntryEditing

UPDATE: EnhancedEntryEditing has been bumped up to v1.01 to fix a bug where popup windows wouldn't disappear after you were done with them. Grab the update, you only need to upload EnhancedEntryEditing.pl

Ajaxify is a series of BigPAPI plugins that adds various javascript and AJAX widgets into Movable Type's interface. It has, of course, been built for Movable Type 3.2. The first of which is EnhancedEntryEditing. This plugin adds two widgets into the entry screen: • Resizable Textareas - I personally find the textareas on the entry screen too small and find it annoying to hack the stylesheet everytime I upgrade Movable Type. This plugin now adds "Increase Size" and...

Forbes online picked up an Associated Press story about the eleven blogs being published by the editorial staff of the News & Record in North Carolina.

The broad range of Movable Type-powered blogs have earned high praise from others in the journalism business. As Editor & Publisher said:

"When the paper's overhaul is complete, it may be a model for the sort of 21st century paper that many journalism big thinkers have been talking about, chewing over, and confabbing on for the last few years," wrote the industry-watching magazine Editor & Publisher. "Greensboro will be the first place where this conceptually...

20. Updated Template Tag Reference

Movalog, Tutorials, 29 KB, 942 words

Some of you may remember the MT Tabs bookmarklet I had created oh so long ago that was quite simply a page that listed all the template tags available for easy reference. The best part of it was that it loaded in your browser's sidebar so it wouldn't interfere with and be separate from your Movable Type installation.

Well that bookmarklet (I'm trying to phase out the name "MT Tabs", it was badly chosen and didn't really reflect what the bookmarklet did) has been updated in a major way. What's new: • Major overhaul of interface so that the tags are now more appropriately grouped and all the tags are now present (including ones I didn't know existed!) • All tags have been...
