61. No MT Comment Notifications

Don't Back Down, Plugins, 8 KB, 450 words

It's recently come to my attention that comment notifications are broken in recent versions of Movable Type. I never noticed this because it never affected me (more on why in a minute). After looking into this, it appears that the change was introduced in version 3.14159, when Six Apart made a change to Comments.pm to address the efficiency of comment posting - namely to keep certain processes from executing unless the comment was visible (approved). This change also affects version 3.15 of the software.

As such, this means that if your comment was visible, you would receive a notification. This is often the case with TypeKey or other authentication mechanisms, as the default setting...

I want to moderate all comments that are posted to my weblog, even those posted by TypeKey commenters.

70. Customizing the MT Edit Window

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 19 KB, 924 words

If you are creating a group weblog with multiple authors, you might want to customize the look of the Movable Type editing windows with the group's logo. MT3.1 makes this really easy to do. The styles.css file and the images folder that are in the folder you chose for your static files on your server are where you can find the files you will need to adjust.

Changing the logo

The default upper left-hand logo of the editing window looks like this in MT3.x:

The file name is topnav-logo.gif and it can be found in the images folder in your static files folder. You can use an image editing program like Photoshop to swap out the Movable Type logo for that of the group's. Save the image...

71. AP story on blogging for bucks

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 13 KB, 98 words

Though these stories always focus on the fact that the raw number of paid bloggers is low, this one's worth reading to note that there actually are a number of people getting paid for the work they do on their blogs. Naturally, one of the easiest transitions bloggers can make to paying work is to become a professional writer, and a few people who've made that transition are interviewed here.

76. More on the Upgrade

Murky, Tutorials, 24 KB, 348 words

I've been fiddling with the website, and MT3.2 seems good.

There are a few spots where the documentation is not yet in place, for example in mt-config.cgi the URL is wrong.

Typekey authentication has stopped working, this is something to do with going back to the MT3.2 default templates (though I've now added minor tweaks). Apparently there are some new templates which I don't have. I put in a support request and was told:

... you may not have the new Site Javascript index template. This template should publish a file named mt-site.js in your weblog folder which contains the necessary TypeKey Javascript.

I have yet to find out how to GET that.

Trackbacks to this site are now subject to filtering, and it is no longer pass or dustbin, trackbacks can be held for moderation before they appear, and I can rescue trackbacks from the bitbucket too. This should make the cleanup after a small trip away much easier....
