21. Power Edit Feedback

Movalog, Tutorials, 27 KB, 594 words

Feedback during Power Edit was a popular hack that unfortunately didn't work with with v3.2. As a result, I rolled the hack into a plugin which I've appropriately dubbed "PowerEditFeedback." This plugin works exactly like the hack except its been updated for v3.2 - the plugin adds two checkboxes, one for the comment status and the other for the trackback/ping status to the power editing page. Installation is very simple, just download the plugin and unzip it in your MT folder preserving the directory structure. As a result, you will get a folder called PowerEditFeedback under your plugins folder, and that's about it, the plugin does the rest!

22. 3.2 Public Beta

Movalog, News, 29 KB, 927 words

UPDATE The beta blog is live. Read all the entries and download 3.2, there's plenty to play with!

Jay's just posted an announcement to ProNet with some juicy details. Movable Type 3.2 will be going into a beta sometime tomorrow in the afternoon. Here comes the best part of the announcement, its a public beta, what this means is that the beta blog will be an open environment and anyone will be able to download a copy and use it.

I've managed to get my hands on some early test builds and the new release is just staggering. So much has changed that 32 posts simply don't do it justice. Almost every single hack I've ever posted onto Movalog has found its way into this release in one way or...

23. Plugin: Smilies

Eat Drink Sleep MT, Plugins, 17 KB, 397 words

Do you like seeing those little smiley emoticons in other people's blog? Then this is the plugin for you!

This plugin will add 13 smiley faces to your Movable Type edit entry screen. With a click, you can add any of the emoticons to your entry's body and extended entry fields, as in the screenshot at the left.

Smilies requires the BigPAPI plugin, which is included in the distribution. Smilies has been tested on version 3.2 of Movable Type only, but should work with MT 3.16 and higher - I'd appreciate hearing if anybody is successful with other versions. • Download and extract. (A donation will support continued development...

24. Movabletype Plugin Updates

Murky, Tutorials, 25 KB, 406 words

Some useful Movabletype plugins have been updated, StyleCatcher, which shipped with MT3.2 has been updated. Note that you can edit the MT templates, I have, but be careful not to change the functionality of the default classes or stylecatcher will not work for you. I changed all my templates to point at a second stylesheet, which gives my own "tweaks". This lets me change the background style with impunity... why is it that most of the styles in the MT style library are fixed width? For that matter, why is MT itself fixed width?

As regular visitors may notice, I've been playing with stylecatcher for a little bit, some things change, and some things stay the...

28. Enhanced Template Header

Don't Back Down, News, 9 KB, 295 words

I know that the new Movable Type just came out, so I probably ought not to make feature requests at this point. Tough. I have one.

Invariably I'm editing templates and I need to jump from the one I'm in - let's just call it an index template - to another, perhaps a template module. The problem? I have to click "templates", then click the "modules" tab to get there. That's two clicks, where it used to be one click and a small scroll. Luckily, the solution is easy. The actual template list looks something like this:

So how about simply including that enhanced header, even when you're editing an individual template? That way I could not only jump to another section, such as the...

29. Movable Type Resource Sites

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 22 KB, 750 words

Fortunately for those of use who use Movable Type, there are several folks who devote much of their free time to understanding, exploring, and extending the capabilities of MT, and are willing to share that knowledge with the rest of us.

Here's my roundup of good sites (in addition to LMT) to investigate while learning how to use Movable Type (I will add to this list over time): Movable Type Support Forums - The MT Forums should be your first stop for questions regarding Movable Type. Before posting, read this thread which will explain general rules of conduct and the best way to find answers. Generally, play nice, read the MT Manual (3.2) ( for 3.1 and earlier) first, and try a search...

30. Blog Selective Hacks

Movalog, Tutorials, 27 KB, 727 words

One of the biggest problems of simple hacks to the system is that they occur system wide, e.g. if you hacked the entry page to specify a default category, that category would become the default for all blogs on the system. This tutorial is a simple hack that will allow you to test the blog_id value and then conditionally display.

Open up lib/MT/App/ and search for

my $blog_id = $app->{query}->param('blog_id');

and add underneath it

$param->{"blog_id_$blog_id"} = 1;

Save and upload it to the appropriate location. That's it, now in your *.tmpl files, you can check the blog_id like so

where the contents of the IF...

31. What Are Your "Essential" Plugins?

Eat Drink Sleep MT, News, 18 KB, 499 words

There are gobs of plugins available for Movable Type. I'd bet that most people who use version 3.2 are using the SpamLookup and Nofollow plugins, and many of you probably have at least a few others installed.

Of all the plugins you use, what are the three most essential? (Yes, you have to narrow it down to three!) Which ones make your site run the way it does, provide you the options you want, or otherwise improve your Movable Type installation?

My favorite three? • SpamLookup is essential for keeping a site spam-free. It does a great job, but you probably already knew that. • SmartyPants provides typographically-correct punctuation: curly quotes, ellipsis, and em-dashes...

Simple Example Templates for Movable Type 3.2

Chris Vannoy has posted some simple Movable Type templates based on the new default templates in Movable Type, but with much of the XHTML structure stripped out so they're easier to read. As Chris explains in his following post, they're not designed to be used on an actual site, since the styling would be pretty ugly by default, but they're a useful basis for creating your own completely custom design if you just need a place to get started.

We'll be producing additional documentation about all the new abilities that templates and styles have in Movable Type 3.2, but this is a great place to start if you...
