161. Revisiting comment spam

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 118 words

With the release of Movable Type 3.14, a lot of people are revisiting the topic of comment spam and offering their opinions. I talked to eWeek's Matt Hicks for their story Movable Type Fixing Bug as Spam Clogs Blogs, and eWeek also has some good discussion over on Sean Gallagher's blog about the tactics that can be used. Meanwhile, Tim Appnel posted Freedom is Slavery on his O'Reilly blog, as an overview of the fact that all comment options on the web are essentially a tradeoff between openness and accountability.

162. Better File Uploader 1.06

Eat Drink Sleep MT, Plugins, 15 KB, 186 words

The Better File Uploader plugin for Movable Type has been updated to version 1.06. This release fixes a small bug: The "enable easier photo gallery creation mode" checkbox wouldn't actually disable that mode. The option will now correctly be disabled if the button is unchecked, removing the For Photo Gallery button from the file upload screen.

Download the plugin, or learn more about Better File Uploader.

165. Oops!

StyleMonkey, News, 14 KB, 87 words

There is a bug in the 3 column version of Panes so I'm taking it down until I get it sorted out. The links in the left sidebar show up as links in Firefox but aren't active for some reason. It works perfectly in IE, which is a first for me. The 2 column versions are not affected.

UPDATE : Fixed it, and the corrected files have been uploaded.

166. Six Apart - Movable Type News - Version 2.1 Released

Six Apart News, News, 13 KB, 145 words

Movable Type version 2.1 is now available to download.

Primarly a maintenance release, 2.1 also includes these features: • The export mechanism now exports your Post Status, Allow Comments, and Convert Breaks values for each entry, and the import mechanism will import them. This means that when you use export-import to transfer data, this metadata will not get lost in the transfer. • Added the ability to rebuild one index template at a time. ( More information) • Big rebuilding speedup if you use the <$MTEntryCategory$> tag. • Added Google API hook for search and similar search in <MTGoogleSearch>. ( More information) • Now supports three metaWeblog methods: newPost,...

2.0 Release Dates

The release of version 2.0 of Movable Type is around the corner. Progress has been slowed down as of late, because we moved, and we are now in Austin, TX for SXSW. But on our return--or shortly thereafter--we plan to launch version 2.0. Specifically, the release will be sometime between March 15 and March 20.

If you have a question to us pending at the moment, please bear with us, as we don't have a lot of time to check email.

For those using the default template style (Georgia Blue) included with Movable Type, you might be interested to know that we do provide Other Styles that can be easily swapped in to replace the default style.

And as you may already know, we are writing two chapters on Movable Type for an O'Reilly book, probably called either Weblogging Essentials or Practical Blogging. Look for it in September.

169. Sigh!! A monkeys work is never done.

StyleMonkey, News, 14 KB, 104 words

Thanks to Robmonster for pointing out that the sidebar links in the newest style, Taffy, were not clickable in Opera. This bug affected all 3 versions of the style.

It is fixed now. If you are using any Taffy flavor or know someone who is, please get/have them get the new CSS file. That's the only file that needs to be updated.

Guess I'll have to start checking the new styles in all 3 browsers from now on.

170. Workflow Feature Freeze

David Raynes, Plugins, 10 KB, 204 words

After finishing up the last few bits of code for Workflow last night, I am freezing the feature list and only committing bug fixes to the trunk now. I released the first real release candidate to the testers last night, and in a couple weeks time, there should be a nicely polished official release of Workflow 1.0 for Movable Type 3.1 or later.

The commercial version will be made available as soon as the I stamp the "official release" label on the code. A version for personal use will be made available when the Dropcash campaign is completed.

I am very excited to get this out the door. I think this is going to be big.

171. White and Blacklist Emails

Movalog, Tutorials, 23 KB, 392 words

The Email Whitelister plugin has been updated to v1.01 to fix several bugs faced by people.

Also due to popular demand, I've released the Email Blacklister plugin which functions exactly like the Whitelister except it junks comments if the email address entered matches one on the blacklist. Currently the plugin is fairly basic and doesn't allow you to enter any wildcard or regex values. A future version will hopefully contain such functionality.

Happy antispamming!

Please note that I will also be setting up another page that contains tutorials that do not required any system code modifications or additional scripting.

Version 2.2 introduced another promising feature - plugins. (More info)

I'm quite excited about this release because the featureset has been requested several times in the MT Support forums. I've created a new drop cash campaign. As with the previous one, once the target is met I'll release the plugin, and as with the previous one donors get priorty support. I have talked about the new release on the campaign page but in case you don't want to read, I've reproduced it here:

MT Protect is a plugin that allows you to protect entries and blogs (new to 1.0) in two main ways, password and Typekey protection. The former uses a simple password while the latter verifies the reader's identity.

1.0 also boasts several new features including Typekey groups, which...
