1. What is a Cool IRI?

alogblog, Plugins, 27 KB, 2465 words

I don't have a complete knowledge on IRI. So below contents might have some misunderstandings. If you find one, please feedback to me.

* At first, this post was written in part of Cool IRI for a permalink. So in this post, you'll often see the words, "this plugin". "This plugin" means that a plugin for a Movable Type bloggin tool, which enables you to create a Cool IRI for blog archives.

You may be stunned by comparatively long page. I swear this content is not deeply technical and is just common knowledge. If you have no time to read it, just see some pictures. Perhaps it will do a little for you.

What means a "Cool" ?

If you've never heard of Cool URI, I...

2. Cool IRI for a permalink

alogblog, Plugins, 20 KB, 1422 words

World Wide Web has been mainly constructed with US-ASCII, even for URL. But in now and future, WWW will shift from US-ASCII only world to Internatinalized world with the help of Unicode, UTF-8, IRI, and so on.

If you are European, or Asian, or others, you would write an entry by your own language, therefore the title of it also will be with yours. However, the default MT removes or deforms non US-ASCII characters in title to make an entry basename for permalink URL(It is completely right in URI side). As a result, they couldn't enjoy full features of MT that can create Cool URI. Only English users could do.

This plugin makes your permalinks as Cool IRI...

3. MT Blogroll 1.0

Movalog, Tutorials, 31 KB, 1261 words

You now know why there hasn't been any updates in nearly 20 days! I'm very proud to announce MT Blogroll 1.0. Basically MT Blogroll is a blogroll manager, similar to blogrolling.com. You are able to store various details about a link including its URI, Name, Description and Relationship and assign them to various categories. If you have been using another blogroll manager like blogrolling.com or blo.gs, you can use the Import OPML tool to import those links into MT Blogroll.

I would suggest reading the README first which describes the installation process and includes some example code. Other documentation includes the Tag Reference which describes the template tags that MT Blogroll...

4. Flash Satay: Embedding Flash While Supporting Standards

A List Apart, Tutorials, 19 KB, 2306 words

I've worked with Flash for several years and have always been slightly dissatisfied with the markup needed to embed a movie in web pages. When I recently published a site in XHTML, my dissatisfaction with the markup grew as I realized that it simply wasn't valid in this context and was bloating my pages to unacceptable levels. A leaner, standards-compliant method of embedding Flash movies was called for.

The Twice-Cooked Method

Flash has always shipped with some method of generating an HTML page to contain Flash movies. Initially, it was a tool called AfterShock. Since the release of Flash 4, authors can export HTML pages with embedded movies from within the Flash...

6. Making A Dynamic Upload Directory

Eat Drink Sleep MT, Tutorials, 29 KB, 1595 words

If you use the Upload File feature in Movable Type, you've no doubt got a folder full of uploaded files. If you use the default "Local Archive Path" or "Local Site Path" destination, you've got a folder full of uploads mixed in with your web pages. I always want to keep my uploaded files separate from all of the web pages just for organization. But now my /uploads/ folder has over 1300 files in it and finding anything is impossible. I needed a better organization method and I didn't want to have to actively think about it.

2005/04/19 Update: The method has been refined quite a bit with The Easy Way, using JavaScript.

2005/05/10 Update: This method is superceded by...

7. Daemon Skins: Separating Presentation from Content

A List Apart, Tutorials, 16 KB, 1641 words

We all have our daemons. They lurk behind the scenes, driving us, seducing us. Their powers can be quite magical.

In the Unix operating system, for instance, the many background tasks that occur behind the scenes are controlled by processes called daemons. Following the Unix tradition of keeping the names of things short, a "d" is appended to the end of the name of the task that the daemon controls. Thus the daemon that controls the hypertext transport protocol (http) on Unix based web servers is called httpd. Similarly, ftpd controls TCP/IP file transfer.

As designers, I often think that we have a design daemon (designd) controlling our creative impulses. When my...
