If the result list is too large, please consider these hints
- Reduce the number of websites.
- Add more keywords.
- Use quotes for building terms from keywords. For example, the phrase banner image searches for all articles containing both words. However, "banner image" searches for the exact two-word phrase.

Question
I want to moderate all comments that are posted to my weblog, even those posted by TypeKey commenters.
Answer
Version 3.2 and higher
Version 3.2 gives you more distinct moderation options for both TypeKey and non-TypeKey comments. Navigate to Settings > Feedback : Comments to locate the Immediately publish comments from setting.
You can choose from the following four options for the setting: • No one
If you choose this option, all submitted comments will be held for moderation, whether or not the commenter used TypeKey. • Trusted commenters only...

Question
When I click on my comment and TrackBack links, they take me to an archive page, but there is no comment posting or TrackBack information on that page.
Answer
The Individual Entry Archive template is the one which contains the comment and TrackBack information; if your Preferred Archive Type in Settings > Publishing1 is not set to Individual, then the links won't point to that page.
So you should either: • Change your Preferred Archive Type to Individual.
• Use the archive_type attribute on the permalink tag: <MTEntryPermalink...

Question
When rebuilding, I receive a message that says Reading from filehandle failed at lib/MT/FileMgr/Local.pm.
Answer
This usually means you have specified an Archive File Template that uses an invalid tag for a particular Archive Type.
Check your Archive File Templates on the Settings > Publishing screen under the Archive Mapping section1, and make sure you are only using the correct available tags for the Archive Type as noted in Can I control the name of my files?.
1 In versions prior to 3.2, navigate to Weblog Configuration >...

Movalog, Tutorials, 31 KB, 856 words

In this thread, Gary highlighted how to have drop downs of archives that basically redirected to the appropriate page once an archive was chosen. With this tutorial, I'll take that one step further and use AJAX such that when you select an archive, rather than redirecting to the corresponding archive page, the appropriate posts will just replace those currently shown. You can see a pretty basic example heremp;
First of all, here's the AJAX code that you'll need to put within your <head></head> tags <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var xmlhttp=false; /*@cc_on @*/ /*@if (@_jscript_version >= 5) try { xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); }...

Question
The larger my weblog gets, the longer my rebuilds take. How can I improve rebuild time?
Answer
You'll want to take a look at our Professional Network article on How to Speed Up Publishing in Movable Type.
One thing not mentioned in that article is that heavy use of the MTInclude tag can also slow down your rebuilds. If you're re-using a lot of content across multiple templates and files, you may want to consider using PHP or SSI includes instead of the MTInclude tag.

Question
I want to change the extensions on my archive files from .html to something else. How do I do this?
Answer
There is a File extension for archive files setting on the Setting > Publishing screen1 where you can specify this.
Do not enter the leading period (.) when entering your desired file extension.
If you are using Archive File Templates, note that you must specify the file extension in the Archive File Template itself - the file extension defined in Weblog Configuration > Preferences will not be automatically applied.
Note: You cannot leave this...

Don't Back Down, News, 7 KB, 250 words
I've just completed the installation of Movable Type 3.17, released earlier by Six Apart. The installation went well. Anyone looking for assistance in upgrading, let me know. We do Movable Type Consulting, you know.
If you do it on your own and you use dynamic publishing and you install things into a new directory, remember to rebuild the mtview.php file. This one caught me, as I put new releases into a new directory to make things easier on myself. The problem is my mtview.php pointed to the old directory, and I could not for the life of me get my dynamic archives to rebuild. Luckily the fix was a simple one.
Why do I change directories? To keep things simple. Rather than trying...

Question
My file names only display the first fifteen characters of the entry title; I want the full title included in the file name.
Answer
Assuming you're not concerned about breaking inbound links, you can override the default file naming behavior by setting up an Archive File Template for your Individual Entry Archives (do this in Settings > Publishing : Archive Mapping1): <MTEntryDate format="%Y/%m">/<MTEntryTitle dirify="1">.html
Save the change and rebuild your site, and this should create a file with...

Question
My domain name has changed and I need to update Movable Type to use the correct location.
Answer
• Update your CGIPath in mt-config.cgi1 to use the new domain name/location of your installation. Use a plain text editor to modify the file and be sure it is uploaded in ASCII mode when restoring it back to the server.
• Log into Movable Type and go to Settings > Publishing2 for your weblog(s). Update the paths there and save the changes.
Note that if your server has not changed, only the domain name, you only need to update the URLs for the new name. If both the server and the domain have changed, you'll need to update both the...

Question
I upgraded to the latest version, but my interface and/or weblog still show the older version number.
Answer
If your interface pages still show the older version, this means that all of the newer Movable Type files were not properly uploaded to your server. (At a minimum, the newest lib/MT.pm file is not present.)
Upload the new upgrade files again, ensuring that: • You use the appropriate mode (ASCII or BINARY) • All the older files were overwritten by the newer versions. • No files were truncated during the transfer.
Refresh the interface page in...

Question
How can I eliminate all the extra space around my entry body text?
Answer
The Convert Line Breaks Formatting Option in Movable Type allows users to use hard returns in their entries and comments, and have these replaced automatically with paragraph (<p>) and break (<br />) tags.
To turn this feature off automatically for all new entries created in the system, navigate to Settings > New Entry Defaults and look for the Text Formatting option1.
For existing entries, the setting must be changed individually on the Edit Entry screen for each entry, and then the entry must be saved again to publish the change....

The Good Book(s)
Most people who know and use Movable Type are extremely web savvy, but that doesn't mean they don't still want to sit down with a good book sometimes. We've rounded up a few books that would be of interest for almost any Movable Type user, from newbies to experts.
One of the most popular titles is Rogers Cadenhead's Movable Type Bible Desktop Edition. Though Rogers has gained some fame from having registered the new Pope's name as a domain name, he's been tasteful enough to refrain from promoting the fact that he's written a bible himself. Aside from the restraint he's shown, the book is great for its in-depth coverage of the...

Question
Sometimes my commenters don't leave a URL, so I want to show their email address instead. How can I display these?
Answer
The default templates use the <MTCommentAuthorLink> tag to provide a link for each commenter. In version 3.16 of Movable Type, the default behavior for displaying email addresses was changed. Now, the rules for the linking are as follows: • If the author has entered a URL, the author name will be a link to that URL. • If no URL was entered, display the author name without a link.
You can override these rules to also...

Answer

This is related to the display of the Movable Type News Feed on the main page. Your server is most likely having trouble retrieving this feed.

Question
When viewing my page, I see the Movable Type Template Tags instead of the actual data.
Answer
There are several reasons why this might occur:
The page was not built using a Movable Type Template.
In order for Template Tags to be processed, they must be read from a Template stored in the system.
In other words, you cannot create a file directly on your server and include these tags, because Movable Type has no way to know it exists. You should create a new Index Template and place your code there, specifying an Output File for the published page....

Question
How can I keep an entry on the top of my weblog's main page?
Answer
Sometimes, you may have an announcement or other important entry that you'd like to stay above the other entries on your weblog. There are several ways to do this.
Post-Date the Entry
The easiest method is to change the Authored On date of your entry to a future date. This will keep it at the top of any listings sorted by date, until an entry with a later date is published.
Edit the Main Index Template
For a note that will always stay on the top and rarely needs to...
