61. Macromedia Contribute vs. the Developer.

MezzoBlue, Tutorials, 11 KB, 616 words

Sending ripples of joy/shock/fear through the web development community, Macromedia announced Contribute this weekend, a $99US content editing system.

The Golden Age?

The smarter web shops have realized that the best approach to site updating comes through enabling the client to literally do it themselves. Comfortable with competition like Vignette, Interwoven and Microsoft's Content Management Server pricing into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, many have elected to create their own Content Management Systems, allowing control over page layout, text formatting, image libraries and more.

Revenue comes from licensing this proprietary technology, and comfortable margins...

I've almost finished up work on MT Blogroll 2.0 and have fixed most (if not all) issues raised with the beta. I've created a dropcash campaign for MT Blogroll 2.0's release. Once the campaign's target has been reached I will release the plugin to public. If you've found version 1.0 or version 2.0b useful consider donating to the campaign. Those that donate to the campaign get priority for support.

63. And The Web Played On

MezzoBlue, Tutorials, 13 KB, 936 words

Pleeeeenty has been going through my head the past few days. Consider this a brain dump if you will. I'm probably very wrong in my conjecture and conclusions, but we all need to vent from time to time.

So Microsoft killed Mac IE this weekend, if you were living under a rock. There has been a rather high volume of coverage. I figured it was inevitable as soon as it became apparent that Microsoft's strategy involved bundling the browser and the OS. Obviously they can't touch Mac OS, and whether that's valid reasoning of not, it spelled out IE's fate on the platform.

Microsoft was initially caught off guard by the web, spent years playing...

65. Mobile CSS

MezzoBlue, Tutorials, 12 KB, 745 words

My old cell phone plan expired some time last week, and after the indentured servitude of a rather lengthy contract (for the sake of free hardware some time in 2001), it was time to refresh the handset. New toy: a tiny little Audiovox 8900.

Being a diligent web guy, one of my first official acts with the new phone was to load up a few sites to see what it could do. The mobile web has so far passed me by; sure, my old Nokia was capable of loading up a text-only version of most any site in its cramped three-line display, but it was never fun. The odd time I'd load up the Zen Garden for the simple thrill of seeing a couple of characters of familiar text on my phone, but...

Simple Example Templates for Movable Type 3.2

Chris Vannoy has posted some simple Movable Type templates based on the new default templates in Movable Type, but with much of the XHTML structure stripped out so they're easier to read. As Chris explains in his following post, they're not designed to be used on an actual site, since the styling would be pretty ugly by default, but they're a useful basis for creating your own completely custom design if you just need a place to get started.

We'll be producing additional documentation about all the new abilities that templates and styles have in Movable Type 3.2, but this is a great place to start if you...

New in Movable Type 3.2: A home for administrators

One of Movable Type's biggest strengths is the platform's support for an unlimited number of weblogs. Once you've got a thriving community of bloggers creating entries and publishing their thoughts, though, it quickly becomes necessary to manage the weblogs on your system.

To meet this need, we've introduced an entire new area of functionality in Movable Type 3.2: The System Overview. We've chosen the System Overview as the first feature to highlight in this new release because it represents a single home for administrators. It's one place to go to oversee everything that's happening across your...
