Written by Brad Choate, who created Movable Type 3.1's Smarty-based dynamic publishing system, the architecture overview covers everything you need to know to get up to speed with this powerful new set of features. And the Professional Network gives us a chance to let Network members shine as well, as...

Eat Drink Sleep MT, News, 15 KB, 168 words

I mentioned earlier that I wanted Movable Type 3.1. Earlier today I successfully installed it, so now danandsherree.com is driven by Movable Type 3.11.

I haven't gotten subcategories set up yet, or any of the other nifty new features. I did get the TypeKey comment system working, though.

Professional Network member Kevin Shay doesn't just keep busy by writing for McSweeney's or Modern Humorist, he's busy writing entire new plugin options for Movable Type.

Kevin's latest (and most impressive) addition to his stable of Movable Type plugins is BigPAPI. The amusing name belies some seriously powerful functionality: BigPAPI lets you transform any part of Movable Type's user interface programmatically, or if you want a soundbite: "server-side Greasemonkey for Movable Type".

With BigPAPI in place, you can manipulate the entire experience of working with Movable Type, creating your own plugins that layer on top of BigPAPI with custom functionality. As Kevin shows,...

191. Happy 4th Birthday Movable Type!

Learning Movable Type, News, 19 KB, 400 words

Anil sent a message out a week ago or so asking people about the impact MT has had on our lives. Here's my story...

I started LMT primarily as a way to keep track of what I was learning while customizing and updating my recipe blog. I created Simply Recipes as a way to document my family's recipes while my parents were still alive and healthy and able to show me how to make all the wonderful things they made for us growing up. Last December I got a call from Mike Dunne, Food Editor of the Sacramento Bee, asking for an interview. Mike's article was published in January and my parents and I were featured on the front page of the food section that week. Complimentary publicity is...

193. Building on Movable Type: A Look Inside Media Manager

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 121 words

Movable Type is far more than blogging software, it is a publishing platform. And for developers, it offers a robust framework for building not just "plugins" but entire applications.

This is the first in a series of articles where we discuss how more complex applications can be built using the Movable Type Platform. Using the Media Manager plugin as an example we will share code samples, discuss the underpinnings of Movable Type’s architecture, and show how you can make the most of Movable Type as a software platform.

194. Simple Example Templates for Movable Type 3.2

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 156 words

Chris Vannoy has posted some simple Movable Type templates based on the new default templates in Movable Type, but with much of the XHTML structure stripped out so they're easier to read. As Chris explains in his following post, they're not designed to be used on an actual site, since the styling would be pretty ugly by default, but they're a useful basis for creating your own completely custom design if you just need a place to get started.

We'll be producing additional documentation about all the new abilities that templates and styles have in Movable Type 3.2, but this is a great place to start if you just want to see the basics of what a template can do.

Version 2.63 of Movable Type is now released. This is a bug fix release, fixing various localization, XML-RPC, Postgres, and Creative Commons errors. This update is also recommended using MT for private weblogs; your IncludeBlogs and ExcludeBlogs settings will now be applied to the experimental mt-view.cgi script. If you are using 2.62 and not experiencing any problems, there is no urgent need to ugprade. If you are having problems with 2.62, the changelog lists the changes and fixes in 2.63.

If you hadn't yet upgraded to 2.6, see the Guide to Movable Type 2.6 for explanations of the above features, and for instructions on adding these features to your existing weblog if you...

197. Integrating custom authentication into Movable Type

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 131 words

Over at Spaceship No Future, some indispensable notes on integrating a custom login system with Movable Type using the TypeKey API.

Through a combination of the official documentation for creating a drop-in authentication service for Movable Type, the tk PHP library from Stuart Parmenter, and the resources from Everything TypeKey, it's possible to use an existing login system in place of the central TypeKey service to authenticate commenters.

Some of the steps are specific to this particular installation, but the general concept should work well with any existing database which needs to be integrated into Movable Type's comment authentication.

199. FAQ: Designing the Movable Type Weblog

Movable Type Weblog, Tutorials, 15 KB, 266 words

Question

How was the design for this website created? And how much work was put into the website?

Answer

I have got used to designing a website in a graphic tool. In my case this means using Adobe Photoshop CS. After the graphical design was finished, I created HTML and CSS. I started with the files belonging to a standard installation of Movable Type.

Estimating the effort is rather difficult, as this was my very first Movable Type project. I had to do a lot of learning and much was found by trial and error. Based on today's knowledge such a website including design and conversion to HTML and CSS can be done in 2-3 days.
