If the result list is too large, please consider these hints

  • Reduce the number of websites.
  • Add more keywords.
  • Use quotes for building terms from keywords. For example, the phrase banner image searches for all articles containing both words. However, "banner image" searches for the exact two-word phrase.

Six Apart User Manual, Manuals, 19 KB, 546 words

After you have uploaded a file, you have the choice of either creating a new entry using that uploaded file, or just displaying the HTML used to link to the file. For example, if you have uploaded an image, and would like to create a new entry with a link to that image in a popup window, select Create a new entry using this uploaded file, and press POPUP IMAGE. If you are already editing an entry, then you won't want to create another new entry (and perhaps lose the one that you are working on); so in that case, click the Show me the HTML button and click POPUP IMAGE. This will display the HTML code for...

An Executive Summary of Ajax

It's been less than a year since Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path coined the term "Ajax" to describe many contemporary web development techniques, but since then the term's become so popular it's inspired its own mini-hype cycle. Fortunately, Adaptive Path is helping to clarify the ideas around Ajax and explain them in simple business terms for the overwhelming majority of companies that just want to know what Ajax can do for them.

With their new free Executive Brief on Ajax, there's a clear explanation of the term that Professional Network members should find invaluable in explaining concepts to your clients,...

184. Sort Entry Listing

Movalog, Tutorials, 34 KB, 1518 words

On the forums, someone recently commented on how the listings in MT could be improved with greater sorting flexibility. I thought that it was a very good idea and so after a bit of hacking managed to get the entry listings to be sorted, it would be easy to adapt this for the comments and trackbacks listing.

This hack will add ascending and descending sorting capabilities to the title and date fields. The rest you can use the Filter option for.

First, you'll need CMS.pm, around line 2411 in the list_entries sub, find the following

my %arg = ( 'sort' => 'created_on', direction => $sort_direction, ($limit eq 'none' ? () : (limit =>...

Learning Movable Type, News, 11 KB, 196 words

Six Apart president Mena Trott has posted a thoughtful response to a slight by Jason Kottke in a post about where the Internet and the blog community are headed. I guess part of the problem of being in any kind of leadership position is that people tend to take pot-shots at you. Kudos to Mena for holding her ground and eloquently explaining why 6A does what it does. She includes some good stats about women bloggers too: LiveJournal-70% women, Typepad-50%, MT-40%.

Six Apart User Manual, Manuals, 25 KB, 818 words

Nofollow

The nofollow plugin is intended to help search engines understand which portions of your page are written by you and which are written by other people. The important element of this content is the hyperlink.

Many search engines use links between sites to understand how they relate. Comment/TrackBack spammers looking for higher placement in search engine rankings seek to exploit this heuristic in order to make their sites more relevant by linking to them from blogs.

By marking which links are part of your site versus part of third-party submissions, search engines can...

Movable Type 3.11 Released: Bugs fixed

We've just released Movable Type 3.11, an update to version 3.1 which corrects some problems that were preventing many users from upgrading their installations.

If you downloaded the general release of Movable Type 3.1 and had trouble using it straight off the bat, this update is for you. Some other bugs were corrected as well; here's a complete list of changes from version 3.1: • Corrected some problems with upgrades: from 3.0x to 3.1x with Berkeley DB, or from 2.6x to 3.0 with any database system. • Updates to templates were not reflected on dynamic pages after saving an entry; that's now fixed. • In some older versions of Perl, a syntax error blocked any use of the...

Strange adding a category called categories... but I digress.

Two Roads Diverged...

I've been working on a new blog in which I want to sort the categories in order other than alphabetical. Now, there is an quick and ugly solution, and there is a time-consuming and beautiful solution. First, we'll look at the ugly way of sorting your categories of the U.S. Presidents:

The Easy, Ugly Way

Create first category for Washington, only call it 01:Washington. Create second category for Adams... name it 02:Adams. So and so on through the U.S. Presidents. When Movable Type builds your page, it catches those initial numbers and puts them in order by number. A...

The Good Book(s)

Most people who know and use Movable Type are extremely web savvy, but that doesn't mean they don't still want to sit down with a good book sometimes. We've rounded up a few books that would be of interest for almost any Movable Type user, from newbies to experts.

One of the most popular titles is Rogers Cadenhead's Movable Type Bible Desktop Edition. Though Rogers has gained some fame from having registered the new Pope's name as a domain name, he's been tasteful enough to refrain from promoting the fact that he's written a bible himself. Aside from the restraint he's shown, the book is great for its in-depth coverage of the...

UPDATE Many people seem to be experiencing the following problems on 3.11: • Categories don't show in entry permalink on first save • When you save an entry, on the individual entry page, the next/previous link points to the first entry of your weblog

Add NoPlacementCache 0 to your mt.cfg file. NoPlacementCache is a variable that caches the category assignments for a particular entry. Currently, a category is assigned and the entry is built in the same operation (or request) and because of caching, that category assignment is getting ignored. If a category is assigned in its own request then it is recognized. There is a bug that is causing the categories to be loaded and cached prior to...

My archive pages are getting too long, so I'd like to change them to just a listing of entries with titles and permalinks, rather than showing the full body for every entry. How do I do this?

Answer

Go to the Edit Template screen for the Archive Template you want to change. Look for the section of code that starts with <MTEntries> and ends with </MTEntries>; then replace it with code similar to this: <ul> <MTEntries> <li><MTEntryDate format="%x"> - » <a...

You now know why there hasn't been any updates in nearly 20 days! I'm very proud to announce MT Blogroll 1.0. Basically MT Blogroll is a blogroll manager, similar to blogrolling.com. If you have been using another blogroll manager like blogrolling.com or blo.gs, you can use the Import OPML tool to import those links into MT Blogroll.

I would suggest reading the README first which describes the installation process and includes some example code. Other documentation includes the Tag Reference which describes the template tags that MT Blogroll...
