The Plazes Plugin receives your current location via the Plazes Web-API and adds a link to your current location to each post. you can also choose to add the city the entry has been posted from as a tag to your post. You need to have a free Plazes account and the Plazes launcher installed in order to be locatable.

A clever use of the Atom API, the MTBloggerBridge plugin lets you mirror posts from a category on your Movable Type installation to a Blogger weblog. It should be fairly easy to tweak the posting capabilities to work with TypePad, Movable Type, or any other AtomEnabled publishing tool.

John Gruber's got a great plugin that's sure to be loved by all of us who are meticulous about our site layouts: Kill 'nav-commenters.gif'.

John's plugin undoes Movable Type's habit of writing a commenter icon .gif to your weblog's root directory. If you've been bugged by the little guy with the talking bubble since version 3.0 came out, now you can have some relief.

If you're using the RateIt plugin from Movable Circus, you might want to add some visuals to the voting process. I created some star icons to use on danandsherree.com, then decided to create a few more color variations to share.

Included in the "star packs" are nine .gif files, depicting ratings from one to five in half-step increments, plus a "zero votes" image to show that no votes have been made. Below is a sampling of each rating from various star packs:

Download the star packs you like: • Black and white • Browns • Green and brown • Greens • Red and blue

If you'd like to use some different colored or sized stars, you can download stars.ai, the Illustrator file I made them with and modify them yourself. If you don't have Illustrator, leave a comment below and I'll try my best to meet your needs....

Hot on the heels of the release of Technorati Tags comes a Movable Type plugin which will automatically generate keywords for a post to populate the Keywords field in Movable Type and then create links to Technorati tags for those keywords. Slick.

Adriaan Tijsseling's released two new bits of code that he's been working on. The first displays a list of recently-played songs from the last.fm service, which is handy for putting your music list on your site, and the second is a revamped version of the MTTechnorati plugin, which pulls information from the Technorati service and lets you display it within your blog.

David Raynes has released the first part of his planned set of features for enabling workflow in Movable Type, appropriately entitled Workflow 0.5. It's a good start at enabling some much-requested functionality for Movable Type, allowing you to route ownership of a post to other authors in the system.

The workflow plugin is designed for users of Movable Type who require fine-grained control over which authors may publish content.

Workflow allows you to grant publishing permission to only the authors you choose (editors), while other authors (contributors) may only save entries as drafts. Once satisfied with their entries, contributors can transfer their entries to an editor who may then publish the entry to the blog.

Any author or editor in the system is notified by email when an entry is transferred to their ownership.

MultiBlog is a plugin that provides the user with the ability to include templated content from other blogs in their MovableType installation. It also allows the user to define rebuild triggers as normally posts to one blog do not cause rebuild in another that might be including content from it. Finally, MultiBlog allows the user to define access controls for the blogs in their system, to prevent one blog from accessing the content of another.

Timothy Appnel has published a fantastic guide to developing plugins for Movable Type. He discusses adding simple tags to the templating system, creating text formatting plugins, and using the data persistence framework to store plugin data. This is a great tutorial for beginning plugin authors, and will hopefully open up plugin authoring to a new group of developers.

In other plugin-related news--if you haven't seen it recently, mt-plugins.org is the best resource for finding and using MT plugins. A bugtracking system was added recently to get users in touch with plugin developers about problems with the plugins.

Kevin's latest (and most impressive) addition to his stable of Movable Type plugins is BigPAPI. As many of you know, there are hundreds of plugins in the Movable Type plugin directory through which you can completely customize and modify the way that the application works. This has always been a great strength of the Movable Type platform and we put great effort in every release to give plugins even more ways to enhance the system.

Smarty Docs

Now that Smarty is built into MT, you've got a whole load of new features that you can use. Just have a look at the documentation everything discussed in those docs are available to MT users, the only difference is instead of single braces you need to use double, for example where in the Smarty docs it gives you a line like this {include file="sidebar.php"}

when you implement that into MT it will need to become {{include file="sidebar.php"}}
