22. Building a Weighted Keyword List

Eat Drink Sleep MT, Tutorials, 36 KB, 1803 words

Similar to the weighted category list, the weighted keyword list builds a list of keywords used on your site and uses varying font sizes to show how popular they are. This list might be more representative of what your site is about than the weighted category list is. Here's the list for this site:

adobe backup book camera camporee car cars cat category cd christmas collection collector color com computer cow danandsherree detail digital dpi dvd elsewhere file files film fire florida image life light links monitor movable movie news nikon page paper park photo photos photoshop php pinball print profile radio raw river scan scanner...

23. What is Trackback?

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 21 KB, 1105 words

Updated April 30, 2005

TrackBack is a feature of Movable Type (and Typepad) that allows you to let other sites know that you have linked to them, and lets you know when other sites have linked to you.

If enabled, the TrackBack feature will place a direct link on your Movable Type entry to entries from other sites that are linking to your entry. Conversely, if you place a link on your weblog entry that links to another site's entry, a link to your site will show up on the other site's entry.

Here an example of TrackBack in action. In this entry you can see that 7 other weblogs are referencing this entry.

Clicking on the TrackBack link will show the list of other sites or weblogs...

Six Apart Mena's Corner, News, 10 KB, 139 words

Technorati's David Sifry informed us about a great opportunity for Bloggers to help support Live 8 and to get a once-in-a-lifetime experience:

The gracious folks from one.org have procured 10 backstage press passes to each of 5 of the following Live 8 concerts - Philadelphia, Paris, Rome, Berlin, and Tokyo. The folks at one.org and Live 8 believe that bloggers can help to shape the media and bring a new voice and perspective - and help to set the agenda - before the G8 conference in Scotland. (BTW, check out their new blog.

Read David's post about how *you* can land a backstage pass

This is quite the event and quite an exciting endeavor for all involved.

27. Blogrolling: Good or Bad

Movalog, Tutorials, 30 KB, 1116 words

Chuck recently asked about adding a blogroll to MT. I pointed him to this tutorial rather than pointing him to Blogrolling.com.

Ever since Blogrolling changed ownership, I've felt that the service has been going downhill. A few months ago, when I removed the blogrolling php code off my site load times drastically decreased. One of my main peeves with blogrolling was that it was located on a remote server. During the transition period that server was often down, and caused load times on my site to shoot up - so high that my site was nearly unaccessible. Another problem with the Blogrolling involves the site Blogshares.com. Some script that were heavily relied on were deleted and caused...

28. WSJ on Blog Search Engines

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 127 words

Vauhini Vara of the Wall Street Journal has published a look at all the new blog search engines that have popped up in recent years, including Technorati, Feedster, IceRocket, DayPop, BlogPulse, Bloglines, and stalwarts such as Google, MSN, and Yahoo.

The challenge facing a lot of these search engines is outlined in the article:

The new services, some of which are less than a year old, aren't without their glitches. The technology is still evolving and companies are still looking for the best way to track and sort blogs. Some services miss large numbers of blogs, while others pull up irrelevant sites.

New in Movable Type 3.2: A home for administrators

One of Movable Type's biggest strengths is the platform's support for an unlimited number of weblogs. Once you've got a thriving community of bloggers creating entries and publishing their thoughts, though, it quickly becomes necessary to manage the weblogs on your system.

To meet this need, we've introduced an entire new area of functionality in Movable Type 3.2: The System Overview. We've chosen the System Overview as the first feature to highlight in this new release because it represents a single home for administrators. It's one place to go to oversee everything that's happening across your...

31. Introduction to Nofollow

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 45 KB, 3949 words

As we've just announced, we'll be supporting the new rel="nofollow" attribute for comment and TrackBack links with our platforms.

With the introduction of the new spec, it's worth reviewing the initiative for Professional Network members who'd like an overview of the entire effort. • What is nofollow?

The HTML specification allows a tags for hyperlinks to include a rel attribute. This attribute is used to specify a link type describing the relationship between the document hosting the hyperlink and the document that is the target of the hyperlink. • Is this valid HTML?

Yup. Though the rel attribute has been relatively obscure (it's used in XFN and Technorati's tags, but...

MT-Blacklist v2.03-beta

As part of the ongoing efforts against comment spam, Jay Allen has released Blacklist v2.03-beta. This release is designed to take advantage of the improvements in Movable Type 3.14, and the combination of the two is an excellent way to manage comment spam while not imposing too much of a burden on your web server.

If you're using an older version of MT-Blacklist, it's strongly recommended that you update to this new version. And just to review, MT-Blacklist, despite the name, MT-Blacklist offers a wide variety of techniques to manage or moderate comments or block spam, in addition to its namesake Blacklisting feature.

34. Blogs, Bandwidth and Banjos: Tightly knit bonds in weblogging.

Six Apart Mena's Corner, News, 43 KB, 2721 words

Ben and I gave a talk at BlogTalk in Vienna on Tuesday. Unfortunately, because of jetlag and some bad timing, we weren't able to convey all the points we wanted to make in the talk itself. So, I'm posting a transcript of the speech we prepared.

I realize that we've never really communicated these messages. I feel strongly — and have always — that personal weblogs are often marginalized because of their presumed triviality. Weblogs are going to hit the mainstream and they're going to be a new method for communicating with small, intimate groups in a more optimized manner.

37. FeedBurner on the Evolution of Feeds

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 16 KB, 115 words

Dick Costolo of FeedBurner has posted an astute analysis of the changes that are happening in the creation, distribution, and publication of XML feeds.

The entire post (and the 300 kb PDF report it's excerpted from) are worth reading, but an early highlight is the succinct description of three critical benefits that feeds provide:

• A notification mechanism for updates to a specific channel of content • The ability to subscribe to content, creating a persistent link between publisher and subscriber • A semi-structured version of the content
