21. Improving MTLookup Ranking (Part 1)

Movable Type Weblog, Tutorials, 25 KB, 1770 words

Several users of MTLookup reported that sometimes the result lists' sort order seemed to be strange. Important entries were on position 10, and not so important entries reached top positions.

I analyzed the situation and compared the result lists that were generated by MTLookup with those that were created by Google and Yahoo. Some important facts could be found.

What is most important, the MTLookup ranking could be improved. Now it works consistent - no matter whether the keyphrase contains short or long words, or it contains words that appear often or seldom it the database.

I could even find some situations, where Google and Yahoo produced not so perfect result lists. It was...

22. Introducing SpamLookup

Brad Choate, Plugins, 126 KB, 4622 words

Yes, it's another anti-spam plugin. I would have called it MT-DSBL 2.0, but the feature set grew beyond the name, so a more generic name was chosen. This is a 2.0 release however… the plugin deserves more seniority than a 1.0 release, since it was built of the carcass that was MT-DSBL 1.1.

The first beta release is now available. Please visit the project page for SpamLookup to download it.

So, what does this thing do? Well, in a nutshell: • Filters inbound comments for all installed weblogs. • Filters inbound TrackBack pings for all installed weblogs. • Checks IP address of sender against DNSBL services....

Six Apart News, News, 52 KB, 4255 words

We have just released Movable Type v3.14 which fixes the issue of extreme loads witnessed on servers under the strain of a massive spam attack. Because these attacks are increasing in both frequency and severity, we strongly recommend that all Movable Type users install this update. This is particularly important for any installation that is visible to the public on the web.

This release is a free update for Movable Type v3.x users and has been thoroughly tested both in-house, by our ProNet members and also by many of the web hosting companies initially affected by the problem. If you already purchased Movable Type or downloaded the free version, you’ll be able to download...

24. MT-DSBL - Open proxy comment filter

Brad Choate, Plugins, 143 KB, 5586 words

DSBL is dead. Long live SpamLookup.

I happened across a WordPress plugin for checking the IP of a commenter against list and it was one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments. So naturally, I ported it to MT.

Requirements: Movable Type 3.1 or later (since it uses the MT 3 callback system and I think the ones I'm using here are new with 3.1). You should also have the CPAN Net::DNS package installed. It can also use the nslookup utility, but it's less efficient that way.

Installation is easy, just drop either or...

I'm happy I could provide this plugin to the MT community.

This plugin, BigTemplateWindow, is for a really big template editing window. The size of template editing box is only limited by that of your monitor. :) First I developed this just for a big template box. In the process of doing it, several useful features was added. I hope almost all MT users could be a little happy by using this.

Feature development for this version was driven almost entirely by requests from our community of users and, therefore, the changes are tightly focused around the way you use the software. Overall, Movable Type 3.2 makes all the common tasks we perform with Movable Type much more satisfying.

Between now and the time it is released, we will be covering "Our 32 Favorite features in Movable Type 3.2" on the Professional Network weblog. Though we'll only be covering highlights of the new version, this release features over 100 new features and improvements. We're sure all users will find this to...

27. MTDisguiseTrackbackURL v0.5 Beta

MT-Hacks, Tutorials, 9 KB, 487 words

You may have been recently hit by several waves of Trackback spam, including a major assault over the last 24 hours. These attacks are clearly automated, sending many pings in a short period of time. Even if MT-Blacklist is effecting repelling these attacks, it can still cause problems for some. In the past few weeks, MT-Blacklist was working so hard to block all the spam that it contributed to a heavy CPU load on the server, resulting in several crashes (I have since moved to a dedicated server). So I have been looking for ways to ease the burden of MT-Blacklist. For trackback spam, one of the first things I tried was to rename my Trackback script from the default 'mt-tb.cgi',...

29. TypeKey Authentication for Comments

Learning Movable Type, Tutorials, 38 KB, 2790 words

The ability to leave comments on other people's weblogs and accept comments on your own is one of the features that make blogs so compelling. Accepting comments on your blog however, can be like having an open house party where ill-behaved uninvited guests show up. TypeKey, a free service from Six Apart, can help you control who gets to comment on your weblog.

If you are setting up a new weblog in MT3.x, adding Typekey authentication is easy. You'll need to get a TypeKey token from and select various comment settings in your weblog config preferences. If you have upgraded to MT3 from an earlier version of Movable Type and want to use TypeKey...
