21. Focus on the Tennessee blogging community

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 128 words

Thanks to a heads-up from Brittney, we noticed a segment that WKRN TV in Nashville, Tennessee ran about the active and growing blogging community in their hometown this week.

As the video of the segment (Windows Media stream) shows, each local gathering of bloggers has its own personality and community.

Some of the bloggers covered include Paul Chenoweth's Movable Type-powered blog and Brittney's Sparkwood & 21, powered by TypePad.

The local news channel's savviness about blogging shouldn't come as a surprise; They have their own roundup of local blogs, including some efforts from their own on-air staff.

22. Three new Gawker Media sites

Six Apart ProNet Weblog, News, 14 KB, 200 words

Publisher Nick Denton has just announced three new weblogs in the Gawker Media stable, Jalopnik, Kotaku, and Screenhead. Covering (respectively) cars, video games, and net silliness of the "funny forwards" variety, these three additions have already garnered coverage in the New York Times despite having launched earlier today.

It's not entirely surprising, of course. Nick's network of sites, including titles like Gawker, Wonkette and Gizmodo, are among the best-known blogs on the web, and have done a good job of helping people who are new to the medium to see the potential of weblogs. And, like all the blogs in the Gawker stable, the new additions are powered by Movable Type 3.11.

Congratulations to the...

23. Trackback Spam Attack

Learning Movable Type, News, 14 KB, 141 words

I've been getting hit all day by a "crap flood" spammer from who is leaving hundreds of nasty spam trackbacks on my various weblogs. This spammer is sure to be hitting other MT weblogs. If you want to preemptively block it from your site, go into your Blacklist settings and block the URL pattern, "pictures-and-videos.com". Make sure you have "Scan incoming TrackBack pings" ticked in your Blacklist Configuration. Have you found the tutorials at Learning Movable Type helpful? Please consider linking to LMT at http://www.learningmovabletype.com/ . Thanks!

24. Building on the Brand

Don't Back Down, News, 11 KB, 449 words

Okay, so it isn't really much of a brand. Yet. But I'm hoping that perhaps one day it will be the one-stop shop for all things Movable Type. Okay, maybe not all things. You'll still need to visit David and Tim from time to time as well.

But in the meantime, I figured it was time to add a little promotion to the company site, and I have done so with not only this entry, but the new Movable Type Consulting page. While it's a bit sparse at the moment, it should serve to get the point(s) across. Namely: A: I work with Movable Type. People pay me for this.

And of course... B: I think that more people should know about this.

While not forgetting... C: MT-Notifier now requires a license (in some cases)....

25. A Dao of Web Design

A List Apart, Tutorials, 26 KB, 3773 words

What Zen was to the 70's (most famously with motorcycle maintenance), the Tao Te Ching was to the 90's. From Piglet and Pooh to Physics and back, many have sought sense in applying the Tao Te Ching to something (the Tao of Physics), or something to the Tao Te Ching (the Tao of Pooh). It can be a cheap trick, but lately it has struck me that there is more than a little to be understood about web design by looking through the prism of the Tao.

Daoism is a philosophy, like Buddhism, a way of living, of being in the world, which stems from a text of great antiquity, the Tao Te Ching, whose 81 "chapters" enigmatically sweep across human experience, but with a strong...

26. The Declination of Independence

A List Apart, Tutorials, 23 KB, 2972 words

With Ryan Holsten and Michael Krisher

The year 2000 came and went. Where did design go? As sad as it sounds, not terribly far. It was a year of trendiness, inspiration, imitation, and the imitation of inspired trendiness. What we can take away from the past year in digital design is the knowledge that the new medium is still deep in its early discovery phase.

Y2K (for lack of a shorter term) was going to change everything. Flying cars, artificial intelligence, talking toasters – this was our supposed fate. So where's our Jetsons lifestyle? Maybe Y3K would have been a more practical projection!

It's 11 p.m. Does your Mom know where you are?

The web is now recognized as...

New in Movable Type 3.2: A home for administrators

One of Movable Type's biggest strengths is the platform's support for an unlimited number of weblogs. Once you've got a thriving community of bloggers creating entries and publishing their thoughts, though, it quickly becomes necessary to manage the weblogs on your system.

To meet this need, we've introduced an entire new area of functionality in Movable Type 3.2: The System Overview. We've chosen the System Overview as the first feature to highlight in this new release because it represents a single home for administrators. It's one place to go to oversee everything that's happening across your...

Dynamic Publishing support for PostgreSQL and SQLite

It's a common refrain for us to talk about Movable Type's wide platform support, but we really are committed to making sure Movable Type's full power is available on the widest variety of platforms. It's an investment that takes a lot of care and attention, but we think it's well worth the effort.

For example, take databases. Movable Type has long supported multiple databases, with MySQL and Berkeley DB being among the most popular. But two mature, popular open-source database technologies that a lot of our users have requested have also part of our platform support for over two years: PostgreSQL and...
