Rebuilding Entries Selectively

Problem

You want to selectively rebuild a batch of entries.

Solution

From the Entries Listing screen, check the entries you want to rebuild; then press the Rebuild button.

Discussion

You can now rebuild entries from the Entries Listing screen. Simply check the published entries you want to rebuild and press the Rebuild button. MT will rebuild the pages and return you to the entries listing.

Question

When I run an upgrade script, I get this error message:

You have not yet upgraded to the #.# version of MT. Please do that before you run this script. Exiting...

where #.# is the version number I am trying to upgrade to.

Answer

When you see this message, it means Movable Type is still detecting files from the previous version on your server.

Make sure that you have uploaded all of the files from the new version package, and that all of the files from previous versions on the server were overwritten with the new files....

Immediately publish comments from...

This setting enables you to control what should happen to non-junk comments after submission based on the status of the commenter. There are four choices: • No one • Trusted commenters only • Any authenticated commenters • Anyone

Trusted commenters only and Any authenticated commenters will hold comments for approval unless they are submitted by trusted or authenticated commenter, respectively.

Managing Notifications

Problem

You need to manage the list of email notification subscribers to your weblog.

Solution

Click the Notifications button on the Weblog Toolbar.

Discussion

You can view and manage the list of subscribers in the Notifications section of Movable Type. You must be granted Edit Address Book permission to manage notifications.

This will be particularly helpful in dealing with bouncing and expired email addresses. You also have the option of adding email addresses manually if necessary. (Be nice and get their permission before you add them.)

Banning A Commenter

Problems

You want to ban a commenter from commenting on a weblog.

Use the Ban Commenter action on the Comments Listing screen.

Entry status

The Entry status controls the display of entries on your weblog. • Published directs Movable Type to include the entry on the published weblog upon the next rebuild. • Unpublished keeps the entry private and accessible only through the Movable Type admin interface • Scheduled instructs Movable Type to keep the entry private until a proscribed date at which point it becomes "Published". Deleting a Category

Problem

You want to delete one or more categories.

Solution

Use the delete action on the Category Listings screen.

Discussion

Click the Categories button in the Weblog Toolbars. (Note that if you do not have Edit Categories permission, Categories will not be listed in the toolbar.) Check the entries to be deleted and then click the Delete button.

Deleting a category will not remove entries assigned to the category. Only the association is permanently deleted.

Adding an Author to a Weblog

Problem

You need to add an existing author to a weblog.

Solution

Use the author's permissions screen to give them access to a weblog.

Discussion

Movable Type's flexible permissions system not only allows you to assign different roles to an author overall, but also different roles per weblog. Before any permission can be granted, the author must be associated with or added to a specific weblog. After associating an author with a weblog, you can then define roles for them.

Question

I get a 500 Internal Server Error when trying to view pages I've set to publish dynamically.

Answer

The dynamic publishing feature creates an .htaccess file in your weblog directory; however, some hosts do not allow the use of these files, and you will see these errors as a result.

You should confirm with your host whether or not you are permitted to use .htaccess files on your account.

I see a new version of Movable Type has been released; does my license entitled me to download this version for free?

Answer

Each 3.x license entitles the owner to free Updates and discounts on Upgrades, where:

* an "Update" is identified by the change of the revision to the right of the decimal point, i.e. X.1 to X.2

* an "Upgrade" is identified by the change of the revision to the left of the decimal point, i.e. 3.X to 4.X

Publishing Content When a Conditional is False

TrackBack passphrase protection

If you have enabled TrackBack pings to a particular category, you can selectively allow access to that functionality by setting a passphrase for the category. Users who wish to send pings to your TrackBack-enabled category will need to know the passphrase in order to ping you.

This is a good way to enable "private" TrackBack items; even if someone can guess the TrackBack ID, he will not be able to send a ping unless he knows the passphrase.

Accept category pings

When you turn on a category's ability to accept TrackBack pings, the system sets up a TrackBack item for this category so that remote sites will be able to send pings to your site, notifying you of new entries that fit within the category. These pings can then be displayed on your site, allowing you to build a repository of links relating to a particular subject.

After clicking the "On" checkbox, save the changes, and the system will give you the TrackBack URL that other users can use to ping your category.
